1. ↑ quy y. Quy là về, mà về đâu ? về cửa Phật. Y có nghĩa là vâng lời theo khuôn mẫu. Vậy Quy-y đầu Phật là nương nhờ cửa Phật và làm y theo lời Phật dạy. Phật từ-thiện cách nào ta phải từ-thiện theo cách nấy. Phật tu cách nào đắc Đạo rồi dạy ta, ta cũng làm theo cách nấy.

Thi Si Poet Viet Chau

 The poet Viet Chau has a real name as Nguyen Xuan Thiep, born in 1918 at Tan Thanh village (Doc Vang township, Dong Thap), the younger brother of Tan Phuong Nguyen Xuan Tang, alias Ngo van Hai, a Hoa Hao Buddhist, former general secretary of the Social Democrat Party of Interprovincial Western region’s Committee from 1946 to 1947. Nguyen Hien Le, a well-known scholar before 1975, is also a younger cousin of his. He commented on Viet Chau’s character thus: “Though he is strong by character, he is sedate and tactful. He is not only a caring family member but a talented poet, therefore my uncle favors him.”

  

In short, Nguyen Xuan Thiep is one of the Southern region’s highly talented, patriotic fighter together with his contemporary revolutionaries resisting the radical members of resistance movements led by The Third International.

 

At 23, around 1941, he became famous with his several masterpieces, the best among which is the Romance of the Goose Feather”, depicting the six and eight syllable line legend of Trong Thuy and My Chau. In his style, one can find the poems imbued with love for country, and nature apart from his romantic inclinations. On the literary tribune, before 1945, he had many friends as famous writers and poets but was a founder of the Doc Vang Thuong tribune.

 

As an admirer of the leader of Hoa Hao Buddhism, Lord Master the Prophet, he took refuge in the religion and was assigned important tasks.

 

This poem was read out by Lord Master on the way back to Saigon from his agrarian campaign on the Wood Rooster (1945). On this occasion, Viet Chau presented his collection of “Long Ngong Gieo Tinh” to the Lord for comment. Having read, the latter improvised:

 

                “My Chau, Oh My Chau,

Why get crazy for a Chinese to depress your Dad!”

 

According to scholar Nguyen Van Hau, even though the Viet Minh tortured him, during his imprisonment, he has proven a dignified, brave man. On the 8th of September 1945, Viet Chau, together with Mr. Huynh Thanh Mau, Lord Master Huynh’s borther and Tran Ngoc Hoanh (the eldest son of the Lieutenant General Trần Van Soai) organized a demonstration at Can Tho to raise mass concern over the dictatorial policy of Trần Van Giau, the chairperson of the Interim Cochinchina Administrative Committee. Before his execution, he left a characteristic lyric thus: 

 

Last year I didn’t die in my anti-French encounter,

For Independence today I die ’cause of My Master.

 Aggressors out there are yet to be eliminated,

      Ironically, now our fratricide starts all over.
