Amitābha Buddha always eagerly looks forward to sentient beings who know how to turn their minds toward goodness and recite the Buddha’s name to do good deeds. Although He sits in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, He constantly uses the five-colored radiance to illuminate the entire Saha world. Whenever He finds a sentient being who knows how to cultivate themselves, establish virtues, and wholeheartedly recite His name, He supports and guides that being to be reborn in the Pure Land.
“The Pure Land practice is the ultimate path,
Diligently follow it so as not to fail the Buddha of the past.”
Speaking of doing good deeds, He never ceases to call upon:
“Everyone must strive to do good,
Recite the Buddha’s name correctly to see the Immortals.
But how does one do good?
Doing good is practicing acts of charity and virtue towards all beings. Everyone knows that doing good is noble, but few are willing to really do it, which is why the Master advises us to strive. However, to do good completely, a practitioner must avoid evil, meaning to both practice good and prevent evil.
The Minh Thánh Sutra says:
“To practice good throughout life,
Even good is not enough;
Commit evil for one day,
Evil is already in excess.”
(Living a whole life doing good, good is still not enough; commit evil for one day, and evil immediately exceeds).
The Master today also teaches: “Do all acts of charity, avoid all acts of wrongdoing…” In short, a person who wants to do good completely must fulfill the Four Gratitudes (practice good) and refrain from the Ten Evils (prevent evil).
