Sám Giảng là bài giảng viết ra hay truyền khẩu có mục đích khuyên rắn hay tiên tri nhằm giúp người nghe cải thiện cách tư duy hay hành động. Theo tự điển Hán Nôm, chữ ‘Sám’ có hình thức viết khác nhau và tùy theo đó định nghĩa cũng có khác nhau nhưng tựu trung đều có tính cách răn đe của các bậc siêu hình, Thần Tiên. Các chữ đi kèm theo như ‘hối’ trong ‘sám hối’, nghĩa là ăn năn, cải hối, ‘giảng’ hay ‘kinh’ trong ‘sám giảng’ hay ‘sám kinh’. Chữ ‘sám’ có hai bộ, bộ tâm và bộ ngôn, như chữ 懴 hay 懺 và chữ 讖. Riêng chữ 讖 có hai âm, âm ‘sám’ và âm ‘sấm’. Riêng chữ ‘sấm’ thường được hiểu lầm là sấm sét, 懴. Điều đó cũng có ý nghĩa tượng trưng thông điệp của Trời cho thế gian, qua các hiện tượng bất thường.
Trở lại phần đầu, thì chữ ‘sám’ dù viết bằng bộ ‘tâm’ hay bộ ‘ngôn’ đều có nghĩa như nhau. Chữ ‘sám’ có bộ ngôn bao gồm những lời kinh tiếng kệ để thức tỉnh người đời, như trong các lời tiên tri của các bậc cao nhân, các vị tu hành đã đắc đạo. Áp dụng trong các bài ‘Sám’ giảng’ của Đức Huỳnh Giáo Chủ, được chép thành năm quyển, toàn bằng thi văn, còn quyển thứ sáu, bằng văn xuôi, và nhiều bài thi văn viết trong thời gian ngày đi du thuyết, định nghĩa trên đều rất phù hợp với nội dung các văn kiện trên. Đức Huỳnh Giáo Chủ đã thể hiện các đặc tính của một vị Bồ Tát lâm phàm và Ngài viết ra giảng kệ để chuyển tải lời chư Phật đến thế gian, nên các lời Ngài viết hay nói ra đều được xem là ‘Sám hay Sấm Giảng’.
Vì tiếng Việt viết theo tiếng Latin chỉ có âm tiết mà không có hình dạng nguyên gốc của từ nguyên, nên có thể được diễn dịch nhiều nghĩa khác nhau, và nội dung hàm chứa nhiều phạm trù khác nhau mà không nhất thiết đi lệnh ý nghĩa nguyên thủy của từ ngữ gốc chữ Hán Việt. Do đó, người ta có thể bao gồm hai ba chữ Hán vào trong mộ́t chữ nôm như chữ ‘Sám’, ‘Sấm’ và ‘Sấm’ (nghĩa là Sấm Sét’).
1. (Động) Ăn năn, hối ngộ. ◎Như: “sám hối” 懺悔 ăn năn.
2. (Danh) Kinh sám hối (nhà Phật). ◎Như: “bái sám” 拜懺 làm lễ cầu cúng, “sám pháp” 懺法 phép lễ sám hối.

① Ăn năn, tự thú tội ra để xin sửa đổi gọi là sám hối 懺悔.
② Kinh của nhà sư làm lễ cầu cũng gọi là sám, tục gọi là bái sám 拜懺. Phép lễ sám hối gọi là sám pháp 懺法.

An oracular sermon is a written sermon or oral transmission that has the character of advice or prophecy to help the listener improve their way of thinking or acting. According to the Han Nom dictionary, the word ‘Sam’ has a different form of writing and its definition is also different depending on it, but all of them have the deterrent character of supernaturals and fairies. The accompanying words like ‘hối’ in ‘remorse’ means repentance. ‘preaching’ or ‘sutra’ in ‘oracular preaching’ or ‘oracular sutra’. The word ‘Sám’ has two radicals, the ‘mind’ and the ‘speech’, such as 懴 or 懺 and 讖 on its left side. Particularly, the character 讖 has two sounds, the sound ‘sam’ and the sound ‘thunder’ (In the Vietnamese language, there is an accent on top of the letter, one with ‘á’ only and the other with ‘ấ’. Particularly, the word ‘sấm’ is often understood as thunder, that may go well with the word with ‘sấm’ that makes one associate ‘prophecy’ with the metaphor as a furious phenomenon from the sky).
Going back to the first part, the word ‘sam’ whether written in the set ‘mind’ or the set of ‘words’ has the same meaning. The word ‘sam’ has a proverb that includes verses and verses to awaken the world, as in the prophecies of the great masters, the monks who have attained the path. Applied in the ‘Sam’ lectures’ of the Patriarch, which are transcribed into five volumes, all in poetry, while the sixth book, in prose, and many written essays during the day of the travels, the above definition is very consistent with the content of the above documents. Patriarch Huynh showed the characteristics of a mortal bodhisattva and he wrote sermons to convey the words of the Buddhas to the world, so the words he wrote or said were considered ‘Sam or Thunder’.
As a Vietnamese word written in Latin has only syllables without revealing the original shape of its etymology, it can be flexibly interpreted in different meanings, and the content contains many different categories without necessarily overlooking the original meaning of the original Chinese words. Therefore, one can include two or three Chinese characters in the nôm script such as ‘Sam’ (‘Thunder’).
