It is the name of the canal dug from Giang Thành, Hà Tiên, along the Vietnam-Cambodia border, connecting to the Hậu Giang River, Châu Đốc, 72 km long and 20 m wide. At the proposal of the Gia Định governor Lê Văn Duyệt to the court in the year Kỷ Mùi 1819, and carried out by the Vĩnh Thanh governor Nguyễn Văn Thoại (Thoại Ngọc Hầu) and military leader Phan Văn Tuyên as supervisors; with the effort of 10,000 villagers and 500 soldiers, digging continued from the beginning of 1819 until April 1820 to complete. In this work, Madame Châu Thị Vĩnh Tế (wife of Thoại Ngọc Hầu) actively contributed her energy to complete the canal, so King Gia Long named it Vĩnh Tế Canal to acknowledge the hard work of the people who contributed.
