In the book “The Madman’s Stanza for the People,” the Master clearly revealed the mysterious calamities that were about to befall the people: heavy taxes, deadly wars, poverty, hunger, and lack of medicine. He then urged the people to awaken and practice Buddhism to avoid the impending doom of the apocalypse. At the same time, he corrected the errors spread by the Shenxiu sect and those who deviated from the true teachings of Buddhism, such as the concepts of sound, form, and appearance, and superstition. He also advised everyone to follow the true Dharma of non-action as taught by the Buddha Shakyamuni from ancient times, so as to directly perceive the Buddha-mind, realize their true nature, or wholeheartedly recite the Buddha’s name and do good deeds to be reborn in the Pure Land and escape the cycle of birth and death.
