A district in Sa Đéc province, consisting of 19 communes, was used as a gathering place for six months for the Đồng Tháp guerrilla resistance forces after the Geneva Agreement; from 1956, Cao Lãnh became the provincial capital of Kiến Phong province (Southern Vietnam).
