Many ideologies emerged, disregarding the concepts of sin and merit, or karma and retribution. They employed all sorts of ruses, cunning schemes and powerful forces to coerce and tempt the people into becoming their puppets. They themselves simply sat back and profited, as long as they could live a life of luxury, with comfortable wives and children, while others suffered hunger, cold, and hardship!
