Huyện Phú Tân
Long Xuyen, the capital city of An Giang province, is a significant urban hub in the Mekong Delta
region of Vietnam. It is known for its rich history, particularly during the time when the
Hoa Hao Buddhist sect was active in the area. The Hoa Hao Buddhists, also known as
Vietnamese Buddhists, practiced a distinct version of Buddhism that was unique to Vietnam.
They were known for their independence and fought against both the Saigon regime and
the Vietcong during the 1950s and ’60s. After the reunification of Vietnam, they were disarmed.
Long Xuyen’s history is intertwined with the Hoa Hao sect, which played a significant role
in the region’s cultural and political landscape.
