The Sanskrit term is Samgha. ‘Sangha’ is the abbreviated pronunciation, fully spoken as ‘Sangha’ (samgha). It refers to a group of monks (Bhikkhus) united together into a community, living with the spirit of the six harmonies. ‘Chúng’ is the Chinese character, meaning a large number of people (community of monks). Therefore, ‘chúng tăng’ consists of two words: Sanskrit and Chinese have the same meaning, combined to refer to the Bhikkhus in a temple or a Buddhist community.
