BE CHARITABLE

(Lord Master wrote this article to raise the generosity of the ladies from afar who visited Him)

Vợ đau con yếu phương nào cho an.

50. Muốn qua truông khổ tìm đường Bồng-Lai.

Ngày kia được trở gót hài,

Về nơi Tiên cảnh ngàn ngày đẹp tươi.

Giàu-sang nghèo-khó cũng người,

Nên Ta thương hết dầu cười hay khen.

Lòng nhơn xin khá tập rèn,

Thạch-Sùng, Vương-Khải sách đèn ai ưa.(2)

Thánh Hiền roi tích đời xưa,

Nhờ tâm từ-thiện người ưa kính thờ.

Chết rồi bỏ của bơ-vơ,

60. Chi bằng làm phải truyện thơ ghi đời.

Xác phàm có mấy lăm hơi,

Hỏi vay có một mà lời đôi ba.

Của dư cho mượn mới là,

64. Hảo tâm bố-thí Ngọc-Tòa được lên.

Chê nghèo, giàu nọ đâu bền,

Chi bằng bố đức lập nền từ-bi.

Con hiền khá sớm hồi-qui,

Nghe lời Thầy dạy kịp thì bớ dân !

Dòm xem kẻ khó tảo-tần,

Rộng tâm san-sớt, dắt lần với nhau.

Nghèo thời cũng rán cháo rau,

Chớ đừng gian-xảo, ngày sau thanh-nhàn.

Bần-cùng cũng sớm liệu-toan,

Giữ tâm ngay thảo, xóm làng mến yêu.

Mộ khan thần tỉnh cần triêu,

Khỏi cơn hoạn-nạn Lam-kiều được lên.

Ít ai giữ đặng chí bền,

Tu theo nước lớn, ròng bèn thả trôi.

Tuy xa mà tới mấy hồi,

Đất còn lở thét phải bồi tự-nhiên.

Thảm-thương cho kẻ tá-điền,

Gặp cơn lúa ngập, của tiền ráo tay.

No chiều rồi lại đói mai,

Lầm-than đói khó vì tai-ách,

Hỡi kẻ sang-giàu cứu nạn trôi.

96. Nạn trôi lúa ngập đói còn xa,

Điền-chủ mau-mau nghĩ tận mà !

Tế-độ dân nghèo trong lúc túng,

Giúp giùm kẻ rối buổi vừa qua.

Có ăn dư huệ nhờ thân nó,

Nghèo-khổ bần-phu thảm dữ a !

Nếu đã xả thân tầm đạo-đức,

104. Mở lòng bố-thí ngộ thần ca.

Tỏ lời nhắn-nhủ khắp đâu đâu,

Vạn-vật từ nay luống thảm-sầu.

Áo-não thương đời đa đói khổ,

CGPGHH Vol I, p221

Look at the last Earth Rabbit year,

And we see people starving far and near.

The straws on scorched fields are lacking,

Bulls are neck stretching, farmers withering.

The coming Metal Dragon is a real dragon,

We look for how fields fare on new season.

The poor families are gut-wrenching,

Sick wives and children are desperating.

Loudly we appeal to the whole community,

Only the landlords can have the best remedy.

From the far hamlets to the near provinces,

We all used to share the same lineages.

Today, some of you are luckily better off,

Please kindly support the worse off.

Uncles, Aunties, senior or junior,

Wherever you are, please be donors.

Once you’ve sorted out your home duty,

Act together in charity to show nobility,

We ourselves don’t mind to work harder,

Give our advice like the music of Boya.

Whoever has a heart like sea and river,

Will you be moved by compassion to deliver.

Give material relief to the poor with dignity,

Teach them to recite Amitabha in a hurry.

The women who are widow yet wealthy,

Own more acreage than egrets can flee.

This time, you should’ve given your asset,

Or risk losing it to your in-laws when dead.

Syndicates, markets owners, brothers, sisters,

Owe their wealth to agricultural workers.

Please help them when crop losses present,

Hot money runs out, their meals are rationed.

At a glance, our guts are being wrenched,

So we appeal to all true fellow adherents.

If someone wants to become Saint,

Give alms and you’ll bypass the Hell land.

If you cling on to riches till the godly ire,

You’ll find it hard to shun your demise.

Anyone has their upsides and downsides,

The affluent owe wealth to the deprived.

Seeing people in jails, we feel very sad,

Please provide for the poor any kind of aid.

Forget your times of acrimony,

And donate listening to Western melody (1).

The seasonal change on Earth is cyclical,

The good and bad times rotate as phasal.

Mishaps weren’t rare since antiquity,

Vicissitudes haven’t been an irregularity.

No fate is avoidable like a recurrent tide,

To overcome it, seek for rebirth in Paradise.

The day you’re able to turn on your heels,

You may arrive at the everlasting Idyll.

Rich or poor, living beings are all human,

Liked or not, we embrace every sentient.

In compassion, be rather conscentious,

The Sages learn from the ancient story,

They’re reverated for their charity.

After your death, you can’t keep any assets,

If you do good, this shall be extolled by poets.

There ain’t many breaths in a lay body,

If you lend one dong, your return is three.

It’s better to have surplus for a borrower,

Due to kindness, you ascend the Jade Tower.

Defile the poor and your riches won’t endure,

It is better to build up a compassion culture.

A good scion must not proscrastinate,

Listen to Master or you should be too late!

Watch the indigent who make ends meet,

Kindly share your luck to each other bit by bit.

Try to be as much frugal as you’re in poverty,

Deceive others not and you shall be in liberty.

If you’re wretched, early prepare yourself,

Be righteous and the village treats you well.

If you take good care of your parents,

The Blue Bridge will free you from predicaments.

Few can keep their vow long enough,

Like they drift down the stream and up.

Though far away, we will soon come over,

As if the landslide eventually recovered.

What a calamity for the tenant farmers!

Inundations stripped them of all treasures.

They can’t afford to have their daily meals,

They’re out of their wits and try to no avail.

Parents, wives and children, require varied help,

The year of deprivation renders people inept.

How miserable are the destitute!

Show your kind-heartedness here, it’s good.

In the kitchen room is the spoon scraping,

The husband’s ragged clothes are drooping.

Baffled, the children beg for the daily eats,

The crowded kids scramble for their seats.

Chopstick friction makes cats think of kind feed,

Dropping spoons delude the poor dogs for treat.

Folks suffer from famine-driven tribulation,

The rich! rescue the victims of inundation.

Rice inundation makes hunger not very far,

Landlords, think it over from your heart!

Bless the poor when they’re in dire straits,

Provide for the survivors of the last case.

The well-to-do selfishly keep their fortune,

How badly the poor suffer won’t go away soon!

If you commit to moral objectives,

Kindly give alms and you’ll intuit mysteries.

Let our word spread far and wide,

All beings will from now on face a great plight.

We’re distraught by their dreadful predicament,

Pitying the society in a short statement.

(1) Listening to Western Melody: The piece of music which Lord Master  would refer to the Western direction, that is, the Western Paradise, implies that the faithful are encouraged to his advice to give help to the poor and owing to this, they can be saved when they fall into dire situations and, after death, may join the Saints.

CGGLPGHH Vol I, p221

̣(2) Shi Chong and Wang Kai are the high-ranking mandarins of Western Jin, in ancient China, who are well-known for their wealth when they are still young.  They are very intelligent and talented as, they know each other's reputation, suggested a competition on who are richer. However, both of them lead a luxurious lives and show no compassion for the poor.

Shi Chong was later executed by the King of Jin for a false accusation of disloyalty which, in fact, was due to his refusal to offer his beautiful wife to the king on his request.

People often use this story to refer to those being opulent and vanish but too apathetic to others' sufferings.  They ended up with a tragic fate to recompensate for sins in their lifetime.

Lord Master remind people through this infamous story that,  when they are rich, they have hardly thought of helping the poor.   When they encounter their misfortune, their repentance should be too late.
